FOC 2018 Semester 1: Camp Arbitrio

What does ‘Arbitrio’ stand for?

Arbitrio was derived from the Latin translation of the board game, Monopoly - which played a major role in the camp’s theme and storyline.

ARBITRIO Background Story

There was once a land where the 4 greatest districts – ALACRITY, IMPERIUM, LUMINOS, EXUBERA lived. After the death of the mayor in the City of ARBITRIO, it triggered a war between the districts in getting the mayor’s cane and the rights to rule ARBITRIO. Will the districts be able to overcome the

trials of jealousy and the struggle for power? Or will this be the fall of the great city of ARBITRIO?

Held on 27th to 28th December 2017, RMITSC welcomed another batch of freshmen with a 2D1N orientation camp. The orientation planning team (OPT) spent 2 months prior in designing games and organising many details for the camp.

Camp games were named after properties found on the Monopoly board. Similar to the actual Monopoly game, each group had to roll a dice at each game station. For instance, when the dice rolls and when it faces “Go To Jail”, the group would have to do a forfeit which involves doing exercises such as push-ups, burpees and jump squats.

Some of the highlights from camp were the campfire and performance night which has been a long tradition in SIM-RMIT orientation camps! It was definitely a memorable moment for many as it featured a soulful sing-along campfire session led by SIM-RMIT Council’s very own talented trio - Irfan, Joevin and Jarron.

The night of Day 1 was concluded with the freshies putting up fanciful and entertaining performances for the whole camp. It was a heartwarming experience to see everyone perform knowing the amount of time and effort each group took to produce such a performance.

BEHIND THE SCENES:

Did you know that most of the games that you played during camp had to be first tried and tested by our councillors?

This is to ensure that any safety concerns can be identified so that incidents would be minimise during the actual camp day itself. Of course, it is also a way for the OPT to gather feedback from councillors as to whether they found the games fun and engaging, so that you would too!

Special thanks to the camp emcees; Boon and Joevin for sacrificing your image by going out of your way in making the freshies laugh and hyping up the camp, the orientation group leaders (OGLs) aka the "camp nannies", who took such great care of our dear freshies throughout the two days and ensuring that the freshies’ welfare was your top priority.

Not forgetting the orientation game masters (OGMs) who not only had to coordinate the gameplay at the stations but also helping out with behind the scenes labour; carrying pails of water and many camp logistics ranging from heavy boxes to bamboo poles.

Lastly, the orientation planing team of Camp ARBITRIO would like to thank the campers and councillors for the camp’s success and needless to say, this camp would not be possible without all of you! We hoped the bonds you forged with your fellow campers will remain strong and that you had just as much fun participating in camp as we did planning it!
